Uber me I know the sun exists and the moon exists. I have taken these for granted I rarely look at them anymore. In TamilNadu the first lullaby a mother sings to her baby is "Nila Nila odi va" which is about the moon and she shows her kid the moon while feeding him .
Well its cold to be feeding my kid outdoors in winter and in Summer the sun is till out . Result is I haven't talked to my kids about the sun or the moon , and kids books don't even have the sun and moon anymore. I teach them about apple, shoe, car, firetruck but no moon. Well that's changing today because we are going to observe the lunar eclipse early tomorrow morning ( Dec 10th 2011am). Its supposed to super well visible from the West Coast. I remember my early experience with eclipses - the solar eclipse was a hyper phenomenon. the schools were closed , we had a million warnings not to step out or look at the sky as our eyes would burn. We watched it on TV for hours as they broadcast step by step what was happening and how the sun became a beautiful diamond ring. Living in a close community of friends it made huge difference - it was like watching a cricket match :) - You'll know what that is like if you live in India.
My kids miss it all and I don't know if it is the world or just the times that have changed. We learned so differently. Anyway today my kids will look at the sky and hopefully see the moon turn orange and I'll tell them an eclipse is when whats under us lines up with is uber us. Think of it that way and the sun and moon can not exactly be Uber Us geometrically (!!).
Anyway I link this post to ABC Wednesday - U week . Maybe I'll post some pictures of the eclipse next time. For those of you interested :
Saturday, Dec. 10, dawn
Total Lunar Eclipse
A total lunar eclipse will be seen in its entirety in eastern Asia, Australia, Oceania, and Alaska. The moon will rise eclipsed in the early evening in Europe and Africa, and set eclipsed just before dawn in western North America.
